PGE ARENA with two IAKS 2013 awards!
PGE ARENA Gdańsk has recently received very important architectural prizes awarded by IOC/IAKS and IPC/IAKS. Both, IOC/IAKS Award and the IPC/IAKS Distinction, are the most important international architecture prizes for sports, leisure and recreational facilities.
The IOC/IAKS Award brings to public attention exemplary buildings and complexes that integrate sensible sustainability and legacy considerations, strong functional planning, and exceptional architectural design.
The IPC/IAKS Distinction is aimed at increasing the accessibility of all sports and leisure facilities as well as architectural projects in order to give opportunities to practice and view sport freely and without barriers to all people, regardless of their physical abilities.
Only three venues in the world have gotten two awards in this year edition of the IAKS competition. Among them was PGE ARENA with Bronze IOC/IAKS Award in Category A: Major outdoor stadiums, and IPC/IAKS Distinction. It was not easy to deserve such honour though, for the IOC/IAKS Award 95 submissions from 30 countries were received, 31 projects from these 95 competed additionally for the IPC/IAKS Distinction.
There’s how the jury explained its choice: “The jury liked approach of this international-standard football stadium making use of local colours. The reference to amber from the nearby Baltic Sea is unparalleled on this huge scale. The honey-coloured light creates a unique atmosphere in this large stadium and gives it a friendly identity. This football stadium also meets the best modern standards in terms of ease of access and egress for spectators to and from every level. The PGE ARENA is exemplary in particular with regard to its provision for visually impaired spectators. They are offered live commentary to enhance the match day experience. A tactile model of the stadium for information and orientation and a “touch tour” of the stadium is also available”.
